Meeting People, Making Friends
Americans are usually casual and friendly. American students smile easily and are not hesitant to talk.
However, this does not mean automatic commitment to a close relationship. Developing close friendships will take some effort on your part.
A good place to meet people outside of classes is the International House, located at 1623 Melrose Ave. (telephone 865-974-4453).
Many activities take place there for international and American students who wish to make new friends.
Rocky Top Cafe and Smokey’s Palace, located in the University Center, have a casual atmosphere, serve inexpensive food, and provide a place to meet friends.
The restaurants and nightspots located on Cumberland Avenue (known as “The Strip”) are other popular places for friends to gather.
If you have a hobby or an interest in sports, you should consider joining a student club.
